MESSIAH UPDATE MESSAGE
Included in today's update: A Message from Father Keith, Lessons for the Triduum Devotions, Information about Services on our website, Bishop's Easter Service at the Cathedral
FROM THE RECTOR
Tomorrow marks the opening day of the Paschal Triduum, or Easter Triduum, the three days of the Church's liturgical year that lead into and culminate with the Great Feast of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. The term 'Triduum' comes from Latin, meaning 'three days'; the term 'Paschal' comes from Hebrew, 'Pesach' being the word for 'Passover', the eight-day Jewish celebration that usually occurs at roughly the same time as the Christian feast of Easter. The three days begin on the evening of Maundy Thursday, include Good Friday and Holy Saturday, ending on the evening of Easter Sunday.
These three days focus on the events of Jesus' Passion - the last supper with the disciples, followed by Jesus' arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, on Thursday evening; Friday's trial before the Jewish authorities and Pilate, the crucifixion and hasty burial; Saturday's sorrowful mourning of Jesus' death - leading into the glory of Christ's Resurrection on Sunday morning.
Each of the Triduum days has special and unique liturgies, written for and celebrated only once each year on the specific day. Sadly, this year's observances will are suspended because of the COVID-19 crisis, but I encourage you to dedicate some time each day in prayer and scripture, either individually or gathered with other members of your household, as preparation for receiving the full joy that comes on Easter morning.
To assist you in your journey through these days, a video of the Good Friday liturgy, featuring the reading of the Passion from St. John's Gospel, will be found on the parish website: messiahgwynedd.org. And an Easter celebration, with prayers, scripture lessons and homily, will be posted to the website in time for your Easter morning worship. I hope you will tune in and worship with us, for while we may be physically separated due to the unusual circumstances of the current situation, we are all united and joined as one through the gift of God's Most Holy Spirit.
In the name of our Savior Jesus Christ,
and our God who wants only health and wholeness for his children,
I send you blessings, peace and grace in these uncertain, confusing and anxious times.
LESSONS FOR THE TRIDUUM DEVOTIONS
Here is the Collect and list of assigned readings for the days of the Paschal Triduum.
Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, instituted the Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may receive it thankfully in remembrance of Jesus Christ our Lord, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life; and who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Almighty God, we pray you graciously to behold this your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed, and given into the hands of sinners, and to suffer death upon the cross; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
O God, Creator of heaven and earth: Grant that, as the crucified body of your dear Son was laid in the tomb and rested on this holy Sabbath, so we may await with him the coming of the third day, and rise with him to newness of life; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
Psalm 95, 88, and 27
O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of the enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
ONCE AGAIN, DON'T FORGET . . .
