LITURGY FOR WORSHIP
FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
OPENING PROCLAMATION
The grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit
be with you. Alleluia!
And also with you. Alleluia! Alleluia!
COLLECT FOR THE DAY (Proper 9A)
O God, you have taught us to keep your commandments by loving you and our neighbor: Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we may be devoted to you with our whole heart, and united to one another with pure affection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
COLLECT FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY
Lord God, in whose Name the founders of this country won liberty for themselves and for us, and lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
LESSONS
Zechariah 9:9-12; Romans 7:15-25a Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30
PSALM 145
The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, *
slow to anger and of great kindness.
The Lord is loving to everyone, *
and his compassion is over all his works.
All your works praise you, O Lord, *
and all your faithful servants bless you.
They make known the glory of your kingdom, *
and speak of your power;
that the peoples may know of your power, *
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, *
and your dominion endures throughout all ages.
The Lord is faithful in all his words *
and merciful in all his deeds.
The Lord upholds all those who fall; *
and lifts up those who are bowed down.
APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit,
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of Saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Response: Hear us, O God.
PRAYER FOR NATIONAL HEALING AND UNITY
O God, who created all peoples in your own image, we thank you for the wonderful diversity of races and peoples who have come together in this great nation, and strengthened our culture with the many gifts, talents, perspectives and flavors they have each brought and shared. Enrich our lives by ever-widening circles of fellowship, abolish all prejudices that separate us, open our eyes to recognize, and acknowledge, and celebrate your presence in those who differ most from us, until our knowledge of your love is made perfect in our love for all your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
