LET'S DO IT
IN THE CHURCH
Last Sunday morning was a wonderful time of worship and reunion! It was so good to be reunited and regathered together as a community of faith after such a long exile! Forty-two of your fellow Messiah friends arrived to worship in-person, and many more tuned in and participated through the live-streaming presentation. Thanks to the hard work of the Messiah Technology Team - Sam Frenkel, Nick Kapusta, Jean London, Lauren Marsh, Dave Reichley - everything went quite smoothly. So . . . let's do it again tomorrow!
If you are unable to join us in-person, several options for participation are available:
The service will be live-streamed on YouTube at 9:30am.
For those without computer access, an audio-only option is available by phone. Simply dial 609-663-5164 to listen to the service.
At the conclusion of worship, a link to the service will be posted on the church website: messiahgwynedd.org.
In addition to the Messiah online worship postings, Bishop Gutierrez will continue to post weekly services on the diocesan website: diopa.org.
Weekly mailings of the liturgy, readings and sermon will continue to be sent to homebound parishioners without computer access. Should you wish to be added or removed from this list, please contact the church office: 215-699-9204.
I am so looking forward to welcoming many more of you back to church, but if you choose not to return until more time has passed, please be assured that your decision is understood and respected.
Blessings! Peace! Grace! And love!
BIRTHDAYS IN THE WEEK AHEAD
O God, our times are in your hands: Look with favor, we pray, on these your servants as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in your goodness all the days of their life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
HELP NEEDED!!! – SUNDAY USHER CORPS
We are in desperate need for volunteers to serve as Sunday morning ushers! Due to some retirements (after lengthy times of service), some unfortunate deaths, and some reluctance at this time to serve for in-person services, the corps has been severely depleted. This places a great strain on our ability to staff this important Sunday morning ministry. BTW: This ministry is not a “males-only” opportunity! We are an equal opportunity ministry! Perhaps you and your spouse, or you and your teenager, or you and your friends would like to serve together. If you are interested in serving or wish more information, please contact Ed Steinbauer (firstname.lastname@example.org; 215-661-9956).
SOMETHING NEW! . . . "CREATIVE ANGELS!"
Please note that in the weekly news, beginning last week, will be an additional column entitled “Creative Angels.” This column will feature recipes that have been submitted during the pandemic, as well as some from family collections. A fun component of this column will also be some simple craft ideas, from time to time, intended to spark our creative juices.
I encourage you to submit to Barbara Stevenson (email@example.com) additional recipes or craft ideas that you would like to share! Thank you!
Today's recipe comes from Cindy Palen's kitchen and is quite appropriate for the abundance of the fall apple harvest. Enjoy!
CHUNKY APPLESAUCE (Cynthia Palen)
4-5 medium apples
Juice of one lemon
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 cup water
3 Tbsp brown sugar
Pinch of each: salt, nutmeg, cloves
Peel and core the apples. Cut into small chunks. In a medium saucepan, combine apples, water and lemon juice. Cook on high heat until mixture reaches a boil. Cover and cook on low for about 10 minutes. Add the sugar, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg and cloves, stirring well. Cook for an additional 10 - 20 minutes. Serve warm or cold, with additional cinnamon sprinkle.
CHURCH SCHOOL NEWS:
WHAT'S IN THE KIDS' BAGS?
In addition to in-person worship resuming last Sunday, Church School for Messiah's pre-school and elementary-age parishioners also started up. Following the very successful model initiated for this past summer's Vacation Bible School, Church School is a virtual experience, with the children and their parents utilizing their computers to live-stream the lesson. Each Sunday morning, beginning at 10:30, Tiffany Reichley, our Church School Director, leads the class in hearing and discussing a Bible story, followed by a variety of activities: songs, games and crafts. Each child received a Church School Bag containing all the resources to fully participate each week. "So, what's in the bag?" Glad you asked!
A Blank Journal: each week we will be adding a picture to our journals to represent the Bible story that we learned.
Crayons and a pencil: We will use them for writing and coloring in our journals and for any other art projects.
A Tealight Candle: We will be using the tea light candle for saying our prayers together. Children can also use them anytime at home that they need help focusing to pray.
A Book of Prayers: Children can use this book at any time to pray!
Coloring Pages: These are for children to color at any time to help them learn the word of God!
A Bible Bingo Board and Chips: These will be for us to play Bingo during our virtual church school meetings!
Playdoh-We will be using playdoh sometimes during our lessons.
A Bible!: Many days we will be reading the Bible stories from a children’s book or bible app, but we will be learning about different parts of the Bible. Feel free to use them to read with your children as well!
A Blank Notecard and Address: This year we will be writing to pen pals from within our church community. I’ve given each person a name and address to get started and a blank card to send. We will be talking in our virtual meeting about what to write in the card.
If you did not receive a bag, or if you know of a child you would enjoy participating in Messiah's Church School, bags are available to be picked up in the narthex and the Church Office.
AND MESSIAH'S YOUTH GROUP, YOM,
ALSO STARTED UP AGAIN!
Also starting up again on Sunday for the fall semester was the Messiah Youth Group, Youth of Messiah (YOM). Middle School and High School students, led by Dave Reichley, our Youth Director, and Cheryl Berry, the youth gathered at 5:00pm to participate in a service project. Small mum plants were planted in pots and notes were written. These will now be delivered to some of our parishioners.
The YOM meet on alternating Sunday evenings, sometimes engaging in Bible study and discussion, sometimes working on a service or outreach project, other times participating in games or other fun activities.
WEEKLY YOGA CLASSES CONTINUE TO
BENEFIT LOCAL SOCIAL AGENCIES
Classes, led by Diana Mulroy, are held outdoors when weather permits and in the Parish Hall when necessary. Each session costs $10, and all proceeds benefit local social service agencies usually supported through Belfry Bargains funds. In the month of September, almost $900 was raised and distributed to Laurel House, Interfaith Housing, Manna on Main Street, and Community Cupboard. Classes are appropriate for all levels - beginners, as well as more advanced participants. Use this link to sign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F4CAEA922A4F58-join2
LITURGY FOR TOMORROW'S WORSHIP
NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
11 October 2020
At the suggestion of a parishioner - thanks, Pam! - you will now find the bulletin for the Sunday service posted on the church website (www.messiahgwynedd.org). This is the same bulletin used in church, so all the responses are provided, along with the weekly lessons, announcements and weekly parish schedule. We hope you will find this to be a more complete resource for participating in the service from home.
SUNDAY SERMON AVAILABLE EACH WEEK
Each week, the text of the Sunday sermon is posted to the website. Feel free to print it out if you find that helpful. And perhaps you might also print a copy and send to someone who doesn't have computer access. This would be greatly appreciated and provide a way for these parishioners to also stay connected.
BISHOP GUTIERREZ PREACHES EACH SUNDAY
Bishop Gutierrez continues to broadcast Sunday morning Eucharist services. You can watch at 9 a.m. on YouTube and Facebook (@Episcopal PA) and any time afterward on the Diocesan website.
PLEASE KEEP YOUR PLEDGE UP TO DATE
Thank you to all of you who have dropped off or sent in your pledge over the past several weeks! Your faithfulness has allowed us to stay current with payroll and bill payment. Please remember to submit this month's pledge. Thank you!
