On the Sunday preceding Thanksgiving, as we anticipate enjoying the traditional holiday feast with family and friends, let us remember those who will hunger and thirst on that day. At both Sunday morning services, please bring non-perishable foods to church, BUT DO NOT PLACE THEM AT THE BACK OF THE CHURCH as is usually done. Instead, take your donation to your seat; and at the time of the Offertory everyone will be invited to bring their food donations forward and place them before the altar. Hopefully, a large variety of foods will be collected that will then be donated to local food cupboards and distributed to our neighbors in need. PLEASE BE GENEROUS!

Remember me

Proper 29 / C Jeremiah 23:1-6; Colossians 1:11-20; Luke 23:33-43 24 November 2019 Whoa! What just happened here? It feels like we have been caught in some sort of time warp! Here it is, the 24th of November, and most of us are still in the midst of making preparations for Thanksgiving. One holiday at a time, please! I get upset when the retail establishment rushes too soon into the Christmas season with decorations appearing before Halloween – and then I find that the Church appoints a Gospel reading that zips right past Christmas and fast forwards us into Good Friday, dumping us headlong into the Crucifixion. This is the final Sunday of the church year, and you may have noticed that the bul

Last Days & End Times

PROPER 28 / C Isaiah 65:17-25; Canticle 9; 2 Thess 3:6-13; Luke 21:5-19 17 November 2019 Alex Trebek could use this Sunday and our lessons assigned for today to make a category for the game show “Jeopardy”. So, contestants: see if you can name things about today which might fall under the category entitled: “Last”. And be sure to frame your answer in the form of a question. At the top of the column: “Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost”. If you said: “What is the next to last Sunday in the church year?”, you are correct. Further down the column: “Luke 21:5-19, this morning’s Gospel.” Answer: “What is Jesus’ last public discourse before his arrest and crucifixion?” And finally – double jeopa

All the Faithful Gathered

All Saints' Sunday / C November 3, 2019 Daniel 7:1-3,15-18; Psalm 149; Ephesians 1:11-23; Luke 6:20-31 All Saints Sunday: the Sunday immediately following November 1st; the day on which the Church stops to remember and honor Christ’s holy ones. I admit that I may be painting this Major Feast Day of the Church with quite a broad brush, but it seems to me that most of us have two ways of thinking about the blessed saints of the Church. And it turns out that neither one of them is particularly helpful in our attempt to relate to these individuals. We either think of “Saints” with a capital “S”: St. Peter, St. Ann, St. Thomas, St. Augustine. These are the great heroes of the faith who populate s
